Dear Mr. Harrison:
As a parent and educator, I am writing to you to acknowledge my support for your Outreach for Animals program. Two years ago, I was fortunate enough to hear your interview on WYSO radio as I was driving to school. Immediately I knew I wanted my students to assist you in any way possible. After discussing your program with my fifth grade students that day, we decided we would begin collecting pennies for your "pets." Pennies are often considered worthless and invaluable to the monetary system and cast aside - much as your rescued animals are considered no longer valuable and cast aside. We believed in you and the symbolism of our project, and we hoped we would raise enough money by the end of the 2002 school year to actually help you. We collected $88.00 in pennies from January to June 2002 and you let us adopt Chico, the Burmese Python, as our own class project pet.
This past year, I moved up to the middle school with my rising sixth graders and of course we picked up once again our "pennies for pets" project - only this time we made it school-wide. By June of this year my students collected almost double our last year's total.., $164.00. We have already decided that next year's goal will be to double this amount.
Mr. Harrison, I can't begin to express how much my students have learned from your program and classroom visits. My students are exactly the type of adolescents who would have wanted to own an exotic pet - or would have tried to capture one on their own had they found one. They now know the risks and dangers involved in both situations. Additionally, as I teach geography, my students have developed a keen interest in where in the world many of these exotic pets originate from - especially Burmese Pythons!
Thank you so much for all that you bring to the classroom. Your books, videos, and visits have transformed us to another world; taught us about safety for ourselves and others; and demonstrated the need for compassion for animals of different cultures. Your program receives "excellent" marks from the lifelong learners here at The Miami Valley School. Well done, sir!
We look forward to continuing our support for Chico - and others!
Warmest regards,
Mrs. Patricia A. DeLotell
